For the week of January 30th
What We’re Learning This Week:


Reading: The students will be reading “Penguins!,” a non-fiction story. We will discuss the text features of the book and compare/contrast this week’s story to last week’s fiction story “Little Penguin’s Tale.” As always, we will be reading poetry for fluency and expression practice.

Writing: We are continuing with our Non-fiction writing. The students are learning how to write a Table of Contents and Chapters for their informational writing books. We also continue to focus on capital letters, ending marks and neat handwriting.

Word Study/Spelling:
Fry Words: look, two, more, write, number
Feature/Pattern of the week: ag, eg, ig, og, ug

Grammar: Continue Adjectives

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core.

For the week of January 23rd
What We’re Learning This Week:


Reading: The students will be reading Little Penguin’s Tale, a fiction story. We will talk about the story being told from different viewpoints, as well as work on describing the characters, setting and major events. As always, we will be reading poetry for fluency and expression practice.

Writing: We are continuing with our Non-fiction writing. The students are learning to write facts and information they know using a teaching voice. We also continue to focus on capital letters, ending marks and neat handwriting.

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Reading: We will be reading the story, “Frog and Toad Together.” “The Garden” and “Frog and Toad All Year: Down the Hill.” Students will be using details in the text to describe key details. They will tell how the characters’ experiences are the same and different as well. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/Centers. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

*Please continue to read your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.

Writing: The first graders will continue their informational writing unit. We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons. During this unit, each child will write information books about lots of different topics and revisit his or her writing to self-assess and revise (they will name a topic, give facts, and provide a sense of closure).

Word Study/Spelling:
Fry Words: Fry Read and Write Words: so, some, her, would, make
Short vowel word families (REVIEW) will be our focus for this quarter. Word families share the same vowels/patterns and rhyme.

Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 22 addition facts in one minute and 22 subtraction facts in one minute (the second quarter goal is 15 addition problems in one minute and 15 subtraction problems in one minute). Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core.

What We’re Learning This Week: Week of January 4th: Happy New Year!

Reading: Ocean Animals (Non-Fiction)
Students will be working on retelling the story including main idea and key details. Students will also show connections to how the animals are built to survive. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

Writing: We will begin our new writing unit which is Non-fiction writing. We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons. Students will be working on teaching others about facts they know about.

Word Study/Spelling:
• Review words from 2nd quarter
• No excuse words- Continue reviewing 2nd quarter word list

Grammar
• Compound words


Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards.
Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.
Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 22 addition facts in one minute and 22 subtraction facts in one minute. You’ll see our weekly practice sheet come home every Friday!
Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. Students will be working on numbers and operations in base ten. We will be using Fact Families to make ten and students will come up with number sentences with these numbers.

3rd grading period Science and Social Studies:
Science: Animal Needs/ Habitats
Social Studies: Economics and dividing time into categories.
