For the week of May 1st
What We’re Learning This Week:


Reading: We will be reading the non-fiction story “Flip, Float, Fly Seeds on the Move.” Students will be charting new & interesting words from the story. They will also chart the different ways the seeds move throughout the story. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

*Please continue to read your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.

Writing: Narrative unit 4 (Realistic Fiction), by the end of this unit the children will be expected to write a story that has two or more events, with details, transition words, and a wrap-up sentence. We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons. During this unit, each child will write a made up story with characters doing realistic things and revisit his or her writing to self-assess and revise.

Word Study/Spelling:
Fry Words: review all the 4th quarter Fry Words
*We will no longer be assessing a feature for spelling, however, we will continue to review assess words from our 100 Fry Read and Write word list.
* We will be introducing long vowel sounds for the remainder of the school year.

Grammar: Prepositions

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core.

4th grading period Science and Social Studies:
Science: Living and Nonliving with Plants
Social Studies: Historical Thinking and Skills/ Heritage

Reading: We will be reading the fiction story “The Dandelion Seed.” Students will be working on using pictures and details to tell about the main idea, details, and setting of the story. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

THIS WEEK: We will be giving reading assessments this week, so we will not be having guided reading sessions, however, your child will still get books to read nightly.

Additionally, we will focus on describing the characters, setting, and major events of this story. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/Centers. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.
